Local Island News

posted in: Computers, Updates

In local Vancouver Island news, CHEK-TV might be going off the air on Monday, after 50 years of service. I hope they find some way to stay on the air, but things are looking grim. In the search for alternative sources of local news, I came across CFAX1070.com quite a while ago, and I’ve been pleased with their up-to-date local coverage. Since it’s based on radio “copy”, all the posts are in upper-case, but that’s a minor quibble.

One major feature that CFAX1070’s website has always lacked, however, is an RSS feed – so, I was unable to get it to work for me on my iPhone.

Until, that is, today.

This morning, I wrote my own RSS feed for their website. It works by scanning their posted headlines and then retrieving the full story, and outputting it to a fancy XML-RSS file that news readers such as Google Reader can easily download and archive for your later perusal. In my case, I intend to use it in an iPhone app called NetNewsWire. Now, since I didn’t spend very much time on the script, there may be issues that make it prone to failure when stories have odd formatting. I hope that those failures will be few and far between, though.

In the meantime, enjoy the fruits of my labour :)
