XBox 360 power supply allegedly causes housefire

posted in: Photography, Updates

Engadget is carrying a story about an Arkansas house fire allegedly caused by an XBox 360’s power supply (or it could have been the power cord, the article was a bit ambiquous). The fire caused over $10,000 in damages.

This is why I bought Andy :)

Andy

Andy is a wire-frame cabinet on caster wheels, from IKEA. It allows maximum airflow for my 360 and its power supply, and also provides convenient storage for all of my accessories :)

  • Wasting time says:

The fire was caused by a lack of airflow, not some flaw in design or mallicious intent. If you read that story and feel sorry for the people, I submit it to you that they were stupid and deserve what they got, and that your sympathy is misdirected.

While I agree that there is no malicious intent, the power supply (and, thanks to the RRoD controversy, the unit itself) are known to have heat dissipation issues. So, although the Arkansas people affected by the fire are mostly to blame, at least part of the blame lies on that flaw in heat dissipation that is inherent in the design of the system.

It behooves the users of the system to be aware of the heat issue, and to take action to prevent it from affecting them personally. And, hey, improving the airflow could also prevent the RRoD, if you have an older unit :) So I’m just trying to spread the word.
